How long indeed! 🧐 This is the question nearly ever querying writer wrestles with. The wait time to hear back from a literary agent after sending a query varies big time. 🕰 Weeks is common (2-8). Some agents respond right away, and others take months.

If an agency has a “no response means no” policy (see their submission guidelines), you may never hear back unless they’re interested.🙏

Asking for more material is a good sign. But a speedy reply is no guarantee.

Keep in mind:

Most agents are swamped. Reading through the slush happens between client meetings, deal negotiations, and editorial work (which often happens on nights and weekends).😴

A slower response doesn’t mean they’re not interested—they could be saving your query to read more carefully when they have time.

Sometimes, they like your work so much, they’re taking their time to show YOU their best feedback.

⏳ When to Nudge:

If the agency allows nudges (check their site or QueryTracker profile), it’s usually okay to follow up after 10–12 weeks—sooner if you’ve had interest from someone else and want to let them know!
