“How do you get writing done with all those cute distractions?” I get that a lot—a result of flooding my feed with baby horse and puppy pics. 🐴🐶My answer: By getting my most challenging chapters done BEFORE I sold my book. (OMG, this wasn’t always the case, says the gal who once wrote a 120k-word manuscript in 12 weeks for Hyperion. And 80k words in 8 weeks for Simon & Schuster.) ✍️😩Here’s the secret: Write those tricky bits before you shop your book. Outline every chapter in detail. That’s the beauty of a Book Proposal—it forces you to figure out your storylines upfront so you know where you’re going and don’t have to panic. 🥰With 4.5 weeks to go until delivery for my #BeautifulWritersBook, I am still creating original content, of course. I’m still exiting the shower covered in suds to get that memory down before it’s gone. But this is the most balanced I’ve ever been on deadline. So far, no all-nighters. No over-caffeinated days or nights. No #TimeDebt. I've cleared my calendar of anything else that requires thinking 🤪, but I'm living a full life in the process. What a concept! 🥳That’s the benefit of taking your time and working with a freelance editor. Having beta readers test your material even further. And workshopping your chapters with LIVE bodies. I did that, on occasion, in Carmel at my #CarmelWritingRetreats during meals and got the BEST feedback. #HeavenTruthfully, I used to be addicted to the manic energy of delivering books in five minutes. “Oh, you need another three chapters tomorrow? No problem: my husband won’t miss me!” (He did. He bailed.) Those habits took their toll, but I was younger then. And an excellent little Time Debtor. Ha. I am cherishing this pace so much more. 💕 My new motto: Have a life while you write your life. 💡 Give yourself time ahead of time so that when you’re staring down the barrel of four weeks to go, you can enjoy your puppies in the sun. 😎 Can I get an amen?! xo#writeon #bookmamamusings #bookmama #bookproposalmagic bookmama.com ...
