This month, Danielle and I interviewed famed memoirist, Mary Karr, who had us giggling with practically every question. Mary’s known for her astute sense of humor and brow-raising honesty and boy did she deliver on, well, being herself!
We talked about how she threw away (“with a capital A, away”) 1,200 finished pages of her manuscript for Lit after years of writing (as in NEVER to be seen again); how she gets through the “scary blankness” of bad writing days; her favorite part about being a successful writer; why she ALWAYS, even now, writes a proposal for every book she publishes, and one of her biggest motivations to write (hint: a lot of writers will disagree with this one). You can subscribe on iTunes here, and if you love it, we won’t be mad it if you feel so moved to jot down a short review in iTunes or share it with your writer friends, or both:).
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to those of you who’ve been enthusiastically listening to the Beautiful Writers Podcast (Danielle LaPorte and I launched with Elizabeth Gilbert 4 weeks ago). We can hardly believe how quickly it’s spread… garnering 28,000+ listens already. Whoa. It’s been fun, too, cutting the price of membership to The Beautiful Writers Group since opening up the celeb interviews to everyone.
If having friends and inspiration to strengthen your art and your soul sounds good to you, this community may just be the answer to your prayers. Seriously, I’m constantly taken aback by the way these ladies (and a few courageous guys) show up for each other! And, how our Q&A calls keep D and me on our literary edge. Yesterday we talked about corporate sponsorships and how to start a editing/retreat business, and answered agent and overwhelm questions—as well as sharing our own approaches to dealing with the gap. (You know, that place between where you are and want to be… because we ALL experience that one.)
I could go on and on. But let’s get back to Mary! Please enjoy our conversation with this literary genius as fuel for your own creative fire. And, keep your suggestions coming in the comments below about who you’d like to hear next. Danielle and I are listening.
xx
